Cool IV line flushes
Before and after the contrast injection, your technologist will push a small amount of sterile saline (salt water) through your IV line. This is called a saline flush, and it serves two purposes: it clears the tubing of any residual contrast and ensures the IV catheter remains open and patent.
The saline is typically at room temperature, which feels noticeably cool compared to your body temperature of 37°C (98.6°F). You will feel a brief cool sensation traveling up your arm from the IV site toward your shoulder. This lasts only a few seconds and is completely harmless.
What to expect: The sequence is: cool saline flush → warm contrast injection → cool saline flush. The contrast itself may also feel slightly cool as it enters, but the vasodilation response quickly overrides this with warmth.

MRI uses a different type of contrast agent called gadolinium, which works through a completely different mechanism than CT iodine contrast. As a result, the physical sensations are generally milder and less dramatic.
What gadolinium feels like
- Mild coolness: The gadolinium solution is injected slowly and may feel slightly cool in the arm.
- Subtle tingling: Some patients report a faint tingling or "pins and needles" sensation in the injection arm or around the mouth. This is due to the solution's osmolarity affecting local nerve endings.
- Minimal warmth: Unlike iodinated contrast, gadolinium rarely causes the full-body warm flush. Any warmth is localized to the injection site.
- No metallic taste: Gadolinium does not typically produce taste changes because it is administered in much smaller volumes and does not interact with taste bud capillaries in the same way.
